High Voltage Capacitor

Dearborn Electronics offers a wide variety of high voltage capacitors, as well as providing custom capacitor design which have been used in military and aerospace market segments.

A high voltage capacitor is a component used to store a charge and energy to be used by a high voltage appliance. Film capacitors, also offered by Dearborn, are high voltage capacitors made from plastic. This type of capacitor has two conducting plates, which are separated by a dielectric, an insulator. The dielectric insulator may be a gas, solid, liquid, or gel. Depending on the substance of the dielectric it will have a different insulating property. The better the insulator is, the higher its resistance, and the lower its dielectric leakage.

Capacitance is a measurement of the ability to store energy. To determine capacitance, the formula is C = K (A/D), where K is a function of the dielectric between electrodes, A is the area of the electrodes, and D is their separation.

In order to find the correct high voltage capacitor, you will need a specific dielectric material and a specific capacitor material. Mentioned above are the dielectrics substances, some different elements for the capacitor components include aluminum, ceramic, glass, polycarbonate, tantalum, and niobium.
